What Is Bioluminescence?

Seafarer Adventurers offers the very best way to experience Bioluminescent while on Grand Cayman Island. This Bio-Bay is one of the most spectacular Bioluminescent Bays in the world.

Bioluminescence exists in all bodies of water and is caused by millions and millions of microscopic single celled phytoplankton called dinoflagellates. They derive all their energy from the sun through photosynthesis and emit light when the water around them is disturbed. They need 12-15 hours of sunlight a day and only light up for 1-3 of seconds before falling to the bottom, only to repeat the process again tomorrow. But the glow around you never stops! Just think how many are in the bay!! The science is interesting: dinoflagellates biologically produce an enzyme called luciferin. When the luciferin combines with oxygen, it produces light, this chemical reaction occurs in a response to what they perceive to be threats.

The Bio-Bay was man-made over 30 years ago to create more water frontage for homes. Little did they realize that they were creating the very best environment for this natural phenomenon to occur. Boats and other means of getting around the Bio Bay have NO negative effect on the dinoflagellate plankton in the Bio-Bay. There are NO OTHER large fish or other creatures in the Bio-Bay. Jellyfish are not an issue as we provide you with a full body protective skin as well as gloves and booties. There are no jellyfish in the winter months, but during the summer months, there are sometimes jellyfish. If by slim chance one is stung; we have relief remedies onboard and any discomfort or itchiness quickly subsides. Some nights the glow in the water might be a bit brighter than others, but we have always seen bioluminescence in the Bay. Our very knowledgeable staff will provide you with more facts and answers your questions while on this journey of discovery.

Relax & Enjoy

The shallow waters of the manmade bay are very warm and very salty. You needn’t fear entering the water. Everyone must wear a flotation device in the water. So even non-swimmers can relax and enjoy themselves. You can of course remain on the boat and view the bioluminescence from above, but it’s a totally different experience to enter the water. Cast your fears aside and take advantage of this once in a lifetime amazing experience!
